ABSTRACT

Large wood (LW) in the river is a natural phenomenon, which is connected to ecological benefits, but it may represent also a potential risk for human occupation of floodplains in cultural landscapes. The presence of LW increases channel heterogeneity and hydromorphological state of the river channel. However, uncontrolled transport of LW can contribute to the flood risk. One of the possibilities of evaluation of benefits and threats connected to LW is to use a concept of ecosystem services. Firstly, we aimed to identify if the concept of ecosystem services is used in relation to LW. We found that existing knowledge about physical and ecological functions of LW are not sufficiently transferred to the ecosystem services. The second part focuses on analyzing ecosystem services in the case of a river reach with LW inventory (the Odra River, Czechia). Based on this inventory, we identified specific regulation, maintenance and cultural services.
