ABSTRACT

Introduction Across the globe the search for accessible higher education (HE) is accelerating. This in part reflects the perceived value of a university to a local and national economy, and more intangible benefits centred on community engagement and cultural development. This chapter explores the opportunities and challenges associated with the establishment of a new university presence, University Campus Suffolk (UCS), in a UK context. While the case study is time-and place-specific, it also raises generic issues that may inform thinking about the establishment of new and different forms of HE. As such, it offers for consideration a model of practice designed to address the ‘new university challenge’ of promoting access to HE, unlocking the potential of specific locations, driving economic development and supporting individual achievement.
