The educational leadership role is one of the most demanding positions in any field. Many people assume that being in a position of management also means that person is a leader. There is a distinct difference between managing and leading. Basically it is like managers are checking off lists with no overall plan or goal. Leading is a paradigm shift from managing. The assembly-line model that promotes managing is becoming archaic. While Business is still one of the most sought-after degrees, the programs include courses on leadership skills and collaboration, along with the traditional accounting and human resource courses. Forbes listed the eight characteristics of effective school leaders. They include: having consistent, high expectations; constantly demonstrating that disadvantage need not be a barrier to achievement; focusing on improving teaching and learning through the use of professional development; expert assessment of pupil development; developing individual students through rich opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
