ABSTRACT
Over the past 25 years or so the enactment of hate crime legislation in the United States has represented one of the most lively and significant trends in criminal law making (Levin, 1999). In Britain we have begun to follow suit by outlawing certain specific ‘hate-motivated’ offences, most notably through the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, but also through other more recent legislation.
