ABSTRACT

Instructional planning is much more a deliberate process than just identifying activities to use with students. The manner in which we sequence activities, how we have students explore their world, and the phenomenon we home in on to focus instruction are essential to ensure students learn the intended material. The process of incorporating the NGSS into practice can be achieved by using the design principles illustrated in the model lessons. The beginning chapters of this book and the model lessons have been an attempt to start the conversation about what effective teaching and learning looks like in real-life settings. We have tried to encourage your professional growth by connecting you with some of the research in science education and model lessons that illustrate the research in practice. Here we share three brief lessons learned from designing and implementing the model lessons with students.
