ABSTRACT

Known for being informal and independent, two traits traced back to the founding fathers, Americans do in fact have clear ideas about what constitutes appropriate, polite behavior. In this chapter, we share some of American rules around greetings, sharing meals and making connections. Americans are known for building relationships while working together and through organizations they join. Whether they are working on a philanthropic project or taking a class (believing in the importance on continuous learning), Americans develop connections. Also included reminders about American restrictions related to consuming alcoholic beverages, smoking and business gifts whether given or received. Although independent and often considered self-absorbed, less well known is the American support of philanthropic causes. Dating back to the need for immigrants to support each other in order to survive Americans today are active supports of a wide variety of philanthropic causes at home and abroad.
