ABSTRACT
“Levantine” identification includes long-standing peoples of the Mediterranean such as Greeks, Italians, Syrian Christians, Armenians, and Jews who lived for centuries in the Ottoman empire. Their cultural flexibility and fluency aided their longevity in the region. Levantines operated at a dense point of structural transfer and cultural translation between knowledge systems of East and West.
