ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of a Gemma-Louise Stevenson. Gemma Stevenson is a freelance sports reporter specialising in disability sport. She has covered wheelchair basketball, disability football, wheelchair rugby and para-powerlifting for Sky Sports, but it is on the wheelchair tennis circuit where she has developed her reputation as a sports reporter. Ryan Atkin notes that the Rainbow Laces campaign – a campaign which sees sportspeople express solidarity with LGBT people by playing with multicoloured laces – is attracting more page views on the Sky Sports website. Sports journalism was an unexpected career change for Stevenson. Sport provides a unique platform to change social attitudes about a range of issues. One of these issues is disability, and in the British sports media has played an important role in bringing disability sport into the mainstream, with London 2012 proving to be a game-changing moment in the history of Paralympic sports coverage.
