Beautiful and exciting or obscure and distasteful? Is Libidinal Economy really a book of political philosophy? If it is, is it a book of responsible philosophy, dedicated to the true and the good? Or is it what we commonly dismiss as metaphysics: a set of classical or pseudo-scientific distinctions (energy-structure, desires–society, intense–weak) adopted uncritically as if true for eternity and wrapped up in rhetoric in order to give false political and moral power to the author? Metaphysics, in this sense, is the last refuge from the scrutiny of empirical research, the rectitude of established moral values and the discipline of logic. It should be our duty to ignore or pour scorn on this book, along with the two collections of essays related to it, Dérive à partir de Marx et Freud and Des Dispositifs pulsionnels. They seem to belong to an age of unreason characterised by the political disappointments of traditional revolutionary politics and the headiness of May 1968 (see La Pensée 68 by Luc Ferry and Alain Renault).
