ABSTRACT

The decades of the 1960s and 1970s were a time of theological ferment in Latin America. Among Protestants, a growing movement developed a theology of mission which contributed significantly to the Lausanne Covenant and the Lausanne Movement. Andrew Kirk's response was his first book in English, and his systematic treatment of the subject was explicit about the evangelical perspective. He wanted to stress the fact that the book had been conceived and developed in the Third World, the locus for his theological discourse being the tense and conflictive Latin American situation. Andrew's important contribution to the Latin American Theological Fraternity (FTL) was very significant not only for his methodical and careful theological work but also for what he represented among us. Andrew's book on Liberation Theology (LT) with which he culminated his time in Latin America, was the first critical systematic treatment of the subject by an evangelical author.
