ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses mostly on precise examples of contemporary practice: some using religious visual conventions to articulate other themes such as suffering or sexuality; others portraying the human body as the site of transcendental experience; some representing or inventing the sense of presences beyond the visual; and others using photography to meditate on death and absence; and others to overturn fixed binaries including that of the Sacred and the Profane.
