ABSTRACT

Most of the economically important lignite deposits in the United States are located in the Gulf Coast and the Northern Great Plains Regions (Figure 6.1). The deposits are composed of relatively low-grade lignite (4,000–6,000 BTU) and are present in relatively thin layers (1–10 m thick). Multiple lignite layers that can be economically mined are commonly found in the geological column.
