Thegeneraltopicofthisbookisinteractionamongmembersofhighriskteams. Linguisticcommunicationisanimportantpartofthisinteraction,andinaddition, reflectsmanyofitsnon-linguisticaspects.Inlinewiththis,theobjectiveofthe LinguisticFactorsGroupwastoidentifypropertiesoflinguisticcommunication thatcorrelatewithtaskloadandperformanceincrewsthatarefacingcomplexand potentiallydangeroustasks.Thisprojectconcentrated,inparticular,on communicationinthecockpitofcommercialaircraft.Theaircraftcockpithasbeen theclassicalobjectofstudyinCrewResourceManagement(cf.Helmreich1997); thecurrentgoalwastolookspecificallyintolinguisticpatternsofbehaviorthat influencethewaysinwhichcrewshandletasks,overandabovethesocialfactors investigatedinCRM.Apracticalreasonforthischoicewasthatrelevantdatawas availablefromtheonsetfromtheThreat/ErrorGroupandwouldlaterbecollected byothersubprojects.GIHREmembersprovidedtheexpertknowledgenecessary foranappropriateanalysisofcommunicationinatechnicaldomain.Withoutthis synergism,theworkoftheLinguisticFactorsGroupwouldnothavebeen possible.
