“I like dat book picas Jellinourbredman rons awei from en old lairi and en old man.” Teachers often pose the following questions about this writing: “What is the child trying to say?” “Is she writing in English?” “This sentence is not readable.” A child in one of our research classrooms wrote: “I like that book because Gingerbread man runs away from an old lady and an old man.”
