ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at roles associated with the staging and performance of music in a live context, taking into consideration both small and large venues. It highlights the venue and discusses the personnel associated with it. Most venues operate a curfew and are only allowed live music performance between certain times; if they exceed this they may lose their licence to entertain, or be fined by their local governing body or council. Music entrepreneurs with the right attributes, who are prepared to take financial risk, could enter the concert promotions industry with relative ease on a small scale. If large concert promotions companies became the new recording companies of the future, it is assumed that they would need a similar business infrastructure to that of established music labels. When concert dates have been secured by an agent and the concert promoter is ready to stage the events, effective event publicity, promotion and public relations (PR) must be employed.
