ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the way to read longer words and to understand what is what in a Russian address. It provides a way to ask questions using verbs and how to make some enquiries in a Russian hotel. In Russian names, generic words do not start with a capital, unless they start a sentence. Sometimes one can see a dash in Russian sentences. It is a punctuation mark which is sometimes used between two nouns when there is no verb in the sentence. If one writes to somebody in Russia, he must be familiar with the unusual Russian envelopes with both addresses on the front. To understand what is what in a Russian address, one needs to keep in mind that for a long time Russians wrote addresses in reverse order. The hushing sounds in Russian are in some kind of a different league. Not all phrases translate directly word for word.
