ABSTRACT
Despite receiving considerable attention in recent years, the origins of domesticated cattle in Africa remain unclear. The paucity of early archaeological remains which distinguish wild and domesticated forms, in addition to the large amount of genetic variability among current African cattle populations, have contributed much confusion to determining the exact origin and chronology of events. Consequently, a number of theories have been invoked offering alternative temporal frameworks or even domestication centres to account for archaeological finds.
