ABSTRACT

The term ‘loanword’ is widely used to designate a word ‘borrowed’ from another language.1 English is full of words originally borrowed from other languages. For example, the words ‘beef’, ‘veal’ and ‘pork’ were borrowed from French after the Norman conquest of England in 1066 due to the prestige of the rulers as exemplified in the area of elegant dining (Hock 1991: 385).
