ABSTRACT

One of the most striking features of the civilization of ancient Egypt is theseemingly homogeneous nature of much of its cultural output. However, research has shown that beneath this superficial likeness there existed, at all times, a range of local variations. These local traditions are found in all types of material and they, along with a range of textual sources, relate to the largely unexplored subject of ancient Egyptian local identities. This chapter looks at different ways in which the question of local identity can be approached, as well as ancient expressions of social identity at a local level.
