ABSTRACT

The world tourism industry is now beginning to turn the corner after the September 11th attack (hereafter “09/11”). According to the President of the WTTC, Jean-Claude Baumgartener, in May 2002, the world-wide industry has suffered badly due to the global impact of 09/11, with an accumulative loss of 7.4 per cent in travel and tourism demand, and the loss of 10 million job-equivalents in years 2001 and 2002. However, he expects the industry will rebound in 2003 with a growth rate of six per cent after a year of stabilisation and recovery in 2002 (Mills, S. 2002). The WTTC has not been alone in monitoring the effects of 09/11 on the tourism industry and publishing regular progress reports on the state of business. For instance, the Travel Business Partnership (2002a, 2002b) records that total visitor arrivals to New York and visitor spending dropped by 10% and 14% respectively. Similar gloomy prognoses are offered for other global destinations.
