ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to describe the specific ways in which institutions, professional groups and individuals from within the fields of social welfare, health and education can make a contribution to supporting Self Help. It was a basic assumption that the central stimulus and comprehensive back-up services can only come from truly independent Self Help Contact Centres, which are open to all sections of the population. The chapter deals with the role of the Contact Centres and their relations with the services mentioned. It follows the survey of general ways in which the infrastructure of Self Help can receive back-up support from these quarters. The chapter examines the specialized contributions which could be made by individuals and institutions in these professional fields. It discusses the support assistance which could be offered by members of the medical profession, by the National Health Insurance bodies, by charitable organizations, by adult education, by associations for the handicapped and by hospitals.
