ABSTRACT

Lancaster today Traces of the past exist today in the sort of houses people live in, the land they own, the jobs they do and the practices they engage in. In Lancaster the physical layout of the city centre is not unlike that in the Middle Ages. The nineteenth century leaves its imprint where the junior school still has a separate boy's entrance and girl's entrance etched in stone above the doorways. In outlying villages buildings which were libraries or men's reading rooms can still be found by the enquiring tourist.
