ABSTRACT

Long tunnels make great demands upon the logistics, for which tunnel mucking-out and supply of materials and equipment (concrete, shotcrete, bolts, steel rings, etc.) have to be carefully planned. For the 57 km long Mont Cenis Base Tunnel and especially the drives from the Modane underground security area in France to the Clarea underground security area in Italy, the construction logistics represents one of the biggest challenge. In this section, the drives of the two hard rock TBMs are planned to reach more than 18 km. Cast of final concrete lining and cross passages construction will be concurrent with TBMs’ excavation. The sole link with the surface will be the already excavated 4 km long Villarodin-Bourget/Modane access gallery, which will serve also a network of galleries and caverns forming the Modane security area. The purpose of the paper is to present the analysis of the logistics at the design stage.
