ABSTRACT

F ollowing Emig’s (1971) and Rogers’ (2011) recommendations for longi-tudinalindividualcasestudiesofthesamestudents,wereportcasestudiesfor10girlsand10boys,whoattendedschoolsinthePaci£cNorthwestof theUnitedStatesatthebeginningofthetwenty-£rstcenturyandwereassessed annuallyforthe£rst£vegrades(ages6-11years).Theindividualchildwriterswere English-language users even if other languages were spoken at home. According toparentreport,twowereAfricanAmerican,twowereAsianAmerican,andthe restwereEuropeanAmerican;onlyonewasadopted.Theirparents’educational levelsrangedfromcommunitycollegetocollegetograduateschool.Theywere selectedfromasampleofover200unreferredchildrenina5yearlongitudinal study of writing, reading, and oral language development because they had also participated in brain imaging at the end of the longitudinal study.
