ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the historical background of Labanotation in Taiwan since its inception in 1970. The supporting text will comprise Labanotation in higher education curriculum, reconstructed dances performed by both Taiwanese schools and professional companies and a current historical compilation of composed dances by Taiwanese choreographers. Liu Feng-shueh introduced Labanotation in Taiwan on several occasions, mostly under the educational system, and then in 1970 through elective courses she offered it to over 30 dance students at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei. Labanotation reconstruction in Taiwan, it is evident that ‘dancing’ remains the most appreciated method in applying Labanotation. Although Liu continues her endless work in Labanotation, and while Legacy and its elaborate collaborative projects have certainly set an important example in the history of dance, there are very few notated dances by Taiwanese choreographers. Local dance educators in Taiwan often question the use and application of Labanotation in school settings.
