ABSTRACT
As loyalty is a recurring theme throughout this book, this chapter will centre on this concept before and more fully consider the role of legal loyalty in defence lawyers’ work, for example regarding role demands, expectations and obligations along with the various loyalties that a should be balanced such as loyalty to the client and loyalty to the law. How defence lawyers construct professional loyalty and how this impacts the lawyer/client relationship are also discussed. The second half of the chapter focuses on when loyalty breaks down and disloyalty is performed.
