ABSTRACT

We apply cartographic methods to analyze lunar sub-polar areas at different scales using modern data obtained by Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Kaguya (SELENE) missions. The main focus of our study is morphometric parameters of the lunar surface at various levels of detail – from global to local, especially potential landing areas. Global and regional maps with relief features demonstrate differences between north and south lunar polar areas in general. To identify areas with presumable hazards at the local level, we applied a set of characteristics (steep slopes, high roughness, availability of fresh craters) that were used as criteria for safe landing. Based on remote sensing data and using a special algorithm developed as GIS-tool we study lunar sub-polar area from different point of view: safety of landing, engineering constraints, scientific interest. A set of maps with various parameters is an effective instrument for estimation of potential landing area at different scales: from surrounding context on global view to high-priority potential landing site.
