ABSTRACT

Lightweight DITA (LwDITA) does not depend exclusively on Extensible Markup Language (XML) structures to create topics of information that can be transformed into intelligent content and multichannel deliverables for users. LwDITA’s initial authoring formats are based on XML, the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and Markdown. At its core, XDITA (the LwDITA format based on XML) is a simplified version of the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA), with a limited set of elements (tags) and options but similar capabilities for content structure, reuse, and publication. HDITA (the LwDITA format based on HTML) uses some HTML5 elements and attributes (particularly custom data attributes) to reproduce some of the content structuring, reuse, and publishing capabilities of DITA without depending on XML. MDITA (the LwDITA format based on Markdown) comes in two profiles. In its core profile, MDITA aligns with the GitHub Flavored Markdown specification. In its extended profile, MDITA uses HDITA elements and attributes to overcome Markdown limitations as a language for authoring structured and reusable content. This chapter identifies the intended audiences for the three initial LwDITA authoring formats.
