ABSTRACT

Hamadani has been defeated, Mahadji's interview with the Emperor has taken place and all the control has come into our (Sindhia's) hands; all this has been done by Anupgiri Gosain; because of his peristence all this has been achieved so quickly". The Gosain became Sindhia's chief instrument in stabilising the unsettled country. He stood by Mahadji in wresting Dig from Malik Muhammad Khan, and mediated in respect of his claims for tribute on the Jaipur Raja. A violent contest was now in progress between Sindhia and Ismail Beg Hamadani in the course of which the Maratha general Rana Khan brust upon Hamadani's besieging army at Agra left under the command of his old father and Gosain Umraogiri. In June Sindhia shattered Ismail Beg's strength, who as a consequence joined hands with Ghulam Qadir. From the abyss of suffering, the monarchy was again lifted to the pedestal of grandeur by Mahadji Sindhia in alliance with Anupgiri.
