COMPANIES EXPERIMENTING WITH CREATIVE STRATEGIES TO MAINTAIN PERFORMANCE
I n the past decade, companies have tried several revolutionary strategiesaimed at maintaining average or better-than-average performance, including decentralizing authority, flattening organization and department hierarchies, and, more recently, inducing weak employees to leave the organization. One organization implementing this and other major management changes is Ford Motor Company, the second largest U.S. automaker. In addition to a buyout program targeted specifically at under performing employees, Ford is retraining 55,000 of its managers in the basics of business. The company's long-term goals are to improve the speed with which the company responds to consumer needs and to increase company growth.
