ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses an aspect of life as a new teacher that can be easily neglected, but is crucial to work-life balance: making time for self-care. Self-care can take many forms—for the purposes of this chapter, readers view it as any activity that maximizes one's physical and/or mental health and can contribute to their effectiveness as a teacher. It takes a look at some self-care activities that can help sustain one's health and therefore contribute to a happy and successful first year of teaching: meditation, exercise, and work-free socializing time. Meditation is a great way to help person to start each day with a calm, clear, and focused mentality. Exercise can enhance one's mood, increase their energy level, and further promote the mental clarity that meditation can help achieve. Socializing without talking about work gives you a brain-break that can help one to be more focused when they return their attention to teaching-oriented tasks.
