ABSTRACT

Opened in October 2012, the Museum of Contemporary Art (moCa) Cleveland’s building is an architectural icon designed by Farshid Moussavi. Originally conceived as a flexible “urban living room,” when put to use, the ground floor did not support moCa’s audience engagement goals structurally or aesthetically. This chapter revisits the decisions that informed the space’s design and key steps taken by the institution over several years to maximize its assets, test solutions to its challenges, and ultimately to redesign the environment to create a more welcoming and engaging experience for all visitors.
