ABSTRACT

As stated in our introductory chapter, the overall purpose of the book is to advance knowledge and understanding of the concept of HRD and its professional practice. We also posited that, whilst being confident in the assertion that MD is intrinsic to HRD theory and practice, we do not adopt a singular or consistent understanding in the book of what MD might be. Rather, the thrust of this volume has been to explore and probe – widely and deeply – the conceptualization, scope and impact of MD, and how it is researched and practised. A further implicit aim of the book has been to examine the contribution that it makes to the overall concept of HRD and its professional practice. The main aim of this final chapter is to pull together key strands of the book in a way that both appreciates the richness of the contributions and yet yields some interesting themes and messages from within the inherent complexity.
