ABSTRACT

In an earlier chapter, when addressing the way power works in organisations, reference was made to ‘position power’ as ‘the power which comes from a person’s formal position in an organisation’. The people who hold most position power in organisations are usually (though not always) the managers. This chapter gets inside the nature and role of managers, starting with an explanation of the somewhat negative image of management in PCE. A glimpse into the manager’s world follows, and an opportunity to recognise that they are also subject to many and varied pressures. We then reflect on the differences between managing and leading, and suggest there is perhaps too much of the first and not enough of the second in PCE. The chapter concludes with some hints and tips about how you can successfully work with and for your own managers as a teacher.
