ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nature of student expectations, including the divergence between learner expectations and those of higher education institutions, and the ways in which learner expectations shift over time as student population change, and as learner progress through the different stages of the higher education lifecycle. It focuses on how purposeful activities can be used to understand and manage student expectations as they transition in, through and out of university. The chapter utilizes interactive and authentic teaching methods and a varied assessment diet, which helps to support the diversity of their students' needs. The modern student is more selective and more demanding, expecting a tailored higher education experience according to their individual needs. Pre-entry activities can be effective in helping students to form realistic expectations, and develop peer networks and links with academic tutors, academic skills, confidence and a sense of belonging. Kandiko and Mawer identified that students expect courses to be personally and vocationally relevant.
