ABSTRACT

Maryland is set within the American Manufacturing Belt and the high demand markets of megalopolis. It is endowed with other factors necessary for manufacturing such as capital, labor supply, and transportation connectivity. In 1980 Maryland ranked twenty-fifth among the states in number of people employed in manufacturing. The primary metals industry is followed in number of employees by food and kindred products, electrical equipment, and printing and publishing. A large number of tourists, from both inside and outside the state, are attracted annually to Maryland's varied features. The Maryland landscape provides many opportunities for sight-seeing, outdoor recreation, and visits to historic sites and special events. The focus of visitor attention is on St. Mary's City, the original capital of Maryland. Travel to and within the region was greatly facilitated by the completion of the new Patuxent River Bridge connecting lower Calvert County with St. Marys County.
