ABSTRACT

There are five main types of manufacturing: project, jobbing, batch, mass and process (Figure  4.1). Process manufacturing is not discussed in this book. It is very high-volume, continuous flow production; examples are oil refineries and chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture. Very highvolume production of discrete parts sometimes approaches near continuous production and can be classified in this group also, e.g., semi-conductor foundries. The other four types apply to discrete part manufacture.
