Map of the South American Plains—Its present state

The main objective of the Map of the South American Plains Project is the elaboration of a map in scale 1:5,000, 000. A general characterization of the major sedimentary systems of the plains is also made. The first phase of the project was dedicated to fit a definition and a classification of plains and to solve several methodological problems. Later on, more than a half of the plains of the continent have been already mapped. The map will be finished in 1990.

Several basic properties of plains are outlined: a) they are composed of a few large sedimentary systems; b) the dynamical processes are relatively slow; c) the sedimentary deposits have a large lateral extension and relatively small thickness; d) there are frequently great climatic variations in a single plain; e) the sedimentary processes produce homogeneous mineralogy and granulometry in large areas. Two important sedimentary systems are sketched: the Pilcomayo alluvial fan and the Pampean aeolian system. The Pilcomayo fan was built during a sequence of humid and dry climates, whereas the Pampean system is of a periglacial nature.

Resumen

El Proyecto Mapa de las Llanuras Sudamericanas tiene como objetivos la elaboración de un mapa en escala 1:5.000.000 y la caracterización general de sus grandes sistemas. Se halla en un avanzado 298estado de desarrollo. Más de la mitad de las llanuras del continente fueron mapeadas, después de elaborarse una definición y una clasif icación. Se espera terminar en 1990. Las grandes llanuras poseen ciertas propiedades básicas: a) están formadas por unos pocos sistemas sedimentarios de grandes dimensiones; b) las variaciones climáticas suelen ser considerables dentro de una misma llanura; c) la mineralogia y granulometria de los sedimentos suele ser homogénea en grandes extensiones. Se describen dos importantes sistemas de llanura: el abanico aluvial del Pilcomayo y el sistema eólico pampeano. El abanico del Pilcomayo fue formado en una sucesión de climas húmedos y secos; el sistema pampeano tiene origen periglacial.
