ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a series of key themes including dating, materials and process. It explores rock art, passage tomb art and decorated artefacts from Neolithic Britain and Ireland and a series of commonalities are evident. The antler macehead from Garboldisham, Norfolk is an iconic decorated Neolithic artefact, which has been reproduced in numerous publications. The chapter deals with a detailed analysis of two artefacts: the chalk block from Monkton Up Wimborne, Dorset and the antler macehead from Garboldisham, Norfolk. The imagery of Newgrange has inspired discussion ever since Edward Lhwyd in 1699 commented on the rude carving and 'barbarous sculpture' of some of the stones. The chapter focuses on a specific rock art location: the Kilmartin region, Argyll, Scotland. It discusses a specific theme, looking at the way in which rock art motifs relate to the rock surfaces from which they are carved.
