ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the main directions of the research presented and discussed in the Thematic Working Group (TWG) 'Mathematical Potential, Creativity and Talent'. It addresses the issues in the following three sections: mathematical creativity, mathematical talent/potential/giftedness, and methodological approaches used in studies associated with these topics. The chapter attempts to bring together some of the findings and open issues of the research studies discussed during the Congress of European Research in Mathematics Education (CERME) meetings. B. Sarrazy and J. Novotna investigated the effects of teaching mathematical creativity in heterogeneous groups and especially the impact on highly able students. In this TWG, mathematical giftedness was connected to high-level performance in mathematics and to mathematical creativity. The TWG 'Mathematical Potential, Creativity and Talent' encouraged international participation and exchange of ideas on the topics of mathematical creativity, potential and talent.
