ABSTRACT

What prompts one to become immersed in a field that inevitably forces him/her to probe the darkest recesses of the human condition? There are no easy answers, and it is a question I’ve pondered long and hard. It is also a question with which, over the past two decades, I have personally and frequently been confronted by other academics, friends, and relatives. More specifically, I have been asked: “What drives you to think, write, and teach about such issues?”—such issues being the deprivation of human rights and genocide.
