ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides perspectives on the ethical questions stirred up by performing different kinds of proximity. The book considers the ethics of withholding attention from problematic performance. By linking physical and political encroachment, Jacques Ranciere stands up for attendants pushed around, sometimes physically, by performance, and suggests maintaining a distance between art and "emancipated spectators". During the 2010 tour of Moon Water by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, the music began skipping and was finally silenced. Phenomenology has since its formalization in the early twentieth century by philosopher Edmund Husserl insisted on the irreducible connection between understanding the world and experiences of it. "Selection" indicates the value of attention on the basis of the economic theory of supply and demand. The limits of the care shape a more or less expansive understanding of care just as they mold an understanding of self.
