ABSTRACT
The title I have chosen for this lecture is a borrowed one, of course.** Duccio Turin’s (1966) inaugural lecture, delivered at University College London on February 14,1966—almost exactly a quarter-of-a-century ago—bore a bit less modest title: ‘What Do We Mean by Building?’ I like to think of Turin as one of my precursors, at least in terms of his intentions.
