ABSTRACT

It is perhaps odd to speak of the truth condition of an imperative. We would normally speak of the imperative as being obeyed or not obeyed. But it is also odd to speak of the truth conditions of a prediction. Predictions are more naturally spoken of as coming true or being fulfilled rather than being true; in this they are like wishes, for one may speak of a wish as coming true or being fulfilled. If I ask of (1) 'Is that a wish or a hope?' there is no suggestion that I think it is ambiguous in meaning.
