ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the tension between writing and research as major outlets for academic women’s creativity, and the role of publication as a performance indicator for purposes of academic career development. It explores how ‘coercive creativity’ affects the process of writing, and considers internalized narratives activated when women claim authority to write in dominant organizations of knowledge production. By gendering both the concept and the application of creativity, it problematizes the relationship between gender, knowledge and power and highlights how feminist discourses influence opportunities for inspiration and publication.
