ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the framing of the protests in connection with the 2015 Greek Crisis in the global broadcasters Deutsche Welle, BBC World and Euronews, informed by a theoretical interest in the preconditions for a European public sphere. In its analysis of daily newscasts by the three channels between 28 June and 12 July 2015, it focuses on the referendum on the austerity measures demanded by the EU and related protests, which provided unique opportunities for the broadcasters’ reporters to critically discuss democratic issues regarding the EU. Analysis of the frames, visibility and salience of actors and issues shows that national governments remained the points of reference and primary definers of crisis even in the reports of the global channels, rather than the critical voices of reporters and protesters.
