ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I engage with the procedural modes of mediation and negotiation. Defining mediation as an overarching process, I describe its tasks and objects. Using different examples, I show that mediation includes many practical activities symbolizing repentance and remorseful behaviour, persuasion, mitigation and coaxing parties towards the negotiation. While I draw upon a wide range of gathered data, this section focuses on the mode, site, form and substance of the negotiation. In the concluding part, some remarks are made about the language and shared principles of the victim–offender meetings.
