ABSTRACT
I. Introduction The airway epithelium fonns a continuous layer from the larynx to the tenninal bronchioles. Therefore, airway epithelial cells are the frrst cells to come into contact with environmental irritants, allergens, and infectious agents. How the epithelial cells interact with such stimuli is likely to be an important detenninant of the airway response.
