ABSTRACT

On the weekend of March 21 and 22, 1992, Chancellor Helmut Kohl of the Federal Republic of Germany visited President George Bush of the United States at the president's weekend retreat at Camp David. Kohl even went so far as to endorse Bush for reelection, telling the press that Bush's successful conduct of American foreign policy should be an important factor in his favor. The meeting between the chancellor and the president provided an additional insight into the new world. At the end of April, President Richard von Weizsäcker came to pay a state visit. He had originally scheduled that visit in 1991 as the very first state visit that he would make after German independence because he wanted to thank the American people for their support of German unity over the years.
