ABSTRACT

Melanocytic tumors may display one or more of the structures (for definitions see Chapter 1) shown in Box 4.1.

Melanocytic tumors may display one or more of the following colors: light brown, dark brown, gray, black, red, white and blue. The location and distribution of the below-mentioned structures (Box 4.1) and colors form distinct global “patterns” that are characteristic of certain specific lesions. In general, benign lesions have dermoscopic structures and colors distributed symmetrically and melanomas have them distributed asymmetrically (A36, A37). In addition to the global patterns there are local features that may prove to be of significance (Table 4.2).
